Holter monitoring is a type of electrocardiography (ECG) used to continuously record a patient's heart rhythm over 24 hours (or longer in some cases).
The main purpose is to detect intermittent or hidden cardiac abnormalities that may not appear during a standard ECG (which only records for a few seconds).

The test is painless. There is no electricity or shock delivered - it's purely a recording device.

- Several small, sticky electrodes are placed on the chest.
- These electrodes are connected by wires to a portable recording device (Holter monitor), which is usually worn around the waist or over the shoulder.
- A 4Cyte Pathology nurse ensures the electrodes are properly attached and the monitor is recording correctly.
- The monitor begins recording continuously as soon as it is turned on.
- The patient wears the monitor for 24 hours or more, depending on the doctor's instructions.
- During this time, they are encouraged to go about normal daily activities, except for bathing or swimming (as most monitors are not waterproof).
- The patient will be given a diary and is asked to record in the diary symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, chest pain, or shortness of breath, noting the time they occurred.
- This helps correlate any symptoms with heart rhythm changes on the recording.
- After the monitoring period, the patient returns the device and the diary to the 4Cye Pathology collection centre.
- A technician downloads the data, and a doctor reviews the recording to identify any abnormal heart rhythms or events.
